Meet the Artist
The artist behind Mulberry & Hare.
I’m Jessica, an artist based in Dorset, creating coloured-pencil portraits and original artwork inspired by the animals we share our lives with and the countryside around us.
My work is rooted in a lifelong love of animals, rural life and the small details that make each subject completely individual.
Rooted in Dorset
A countryside upbringing and a lifelong passion.
I grew up surrounded by the Dorset countryside, where animals and rural life have always been a natural part of who I am. From an early age, horses, dogs and the landscapes around me shaped a love of the countryside that has stayed with me ever since.
That connection still finds its way into everything I create — from much-loved family pets to the working animals and wildlife that are so closely woven into country life.
Why Animals Are at the Heart
Companions, working partners and a way of life.
Animals have always been at the heart of my life. They are our companions, our shadows and, for many of us, our working partners too.
That connection is what sits behind so much of my work. Whether I’m drawing a much-loved family dog, a horse, a hound or a working gundog, I’m interested in the character and relationship behind the subject — not simply creating a likeness.
It’s also what naturally connects my pet portraits with my countryside and fieldsports work. So much of rural life is built around the animals alongside us.
Meet the Studio Assistants
Scooby & Paddington.
My own two companions and permanent studio assistants. They’re never far away while I work, and are a constant reminder of exactly why our animals mean so much to us — and why I love creating artwork that celebrates them.
The Work
Built slowly, detail by detail.
I work primarily in coloured pencil, building each piece slowly in layers to create depth, colour and fine detail.
I use professional-quality archival, lightfast materials, carefully chosen so that each finished artwork can be enjoyed for years to come.
For me, it’s often the smallest details that bring a subject to life — the expression in an eye, the texture of a coat, or the markings and mannerisms that make an animal unmistakably themselves.
